Help Your Tree Heal: Identifying, Cleaning, and Managing Bark Injuries

Trees are often injured. Tree wounds can be caused by anything that damages the living tissue or breaks the bark of the tree. What can you do to treat tree wounds?

Sometimes it is impossible to stop the bleeding. Trees are able to heal and contain their own wounds. If you’ve injured a tree trunk, it is possible to heal or improve the appearance of the wound.

What is a tree wound?

Any injury to a tree that causes the bark to be broken is considered a tree wound. Tree bark, like human skin is designed to keep pathogens and bacteria out.

Cambium is damaged by wounds that puncture the bark. This thin layer of vascular tissues is vital for the movement and nourishment water in the trees. The tree will grow back if the bark isn’t damaged by more than 25 percent. The greater the amount of bark removed, the higher the risk for the tree to die. Contact a certified arborist to learn how to treat the wounds on your tree.

How to identify tree wounds

If you notice any marks on the bark, such as scratches or burns caused by lawn equipment, or holes made by pests or boring bugs, it may have been damaged. Both the bark of a plant and your skin heal in a similar way. The way your tree has healed will tell you if it is damaged. This is the same as a callus or scab on your skin.

For trees, these containment methods are called Barrier Zones and Compartmentalization.

Barrier Zones

The tree will try to stop any further damage by creating chemical barriers and closing the damaged tissue. The tree will be able to prevent the spread of infection if it can quickly and effectively create a barrier. Trees that are actively growing can handle decay well.

Compartmentalization

When trees are injured, they have an unusual defense against fungi. At the edge of the wound, “callus” tissue develops. This new wood produces compounds that are special and prevents the spread of infection.

This protection process is called compartmentalization. After the walls are compartmentalized, discoloration or decay can’t spread until they break.

How to treat tree injuries

Scribing Wounds

The bark of trees may be torn when a wound occurs. First, “scribe” or cut the damaged and dead bark with a sharp knife. This will encourage the healing process, and reduce the rot. Be careful when removing the bark to avoid exposing a large amount of living tissue.

Pruning Wounds

Properly pruned trees can heal faster and resist infection. Winter is the ideal time to prune your trees as they will be less susceptible to infection and more dormant.

Pruning can put the tree in a stressful situation because it creates wounds which could become entry points for diseases. Pruning low, crossing or dangerous branches is important. Also, dead, dying and broken branches must be removed. By cutting the limbs flush to the trunk, you can increase the size of the area. This will increase the likelihood of the wound decaying. Leave no stubs. Make sure your cuts are clean and smooth.

Cavity Fillings & Wound Dressings

In most cases, it is better to let the wound heal naturally. Filling in a hole does not improve the health of a plant. The main reason for filling large holes in trees is cosmetic, as the fillings stop callus tissue from folding over the wound.

Filling or wound paints do not stop decay. They can cause damage to the tree if they aren’t allowed to heal. Wound dressings may cause these problems.

  • This encourages drying, and helps to prevent fungi like oak wilt.
  • This product inhibits the growth of callus or wood tissue.
  • This prevents the separation and compartmentalization of goods
  • Food sources of pathogens

What causes tree wounds?

Most tree injuries are caused by equipment operated too close to a trunk. Gardeners who use lawnmowers and other equipment can seriously damage trees. Nature can damage trees. Trees can be affected by storms, wildfires, and wildlife.

This is a list of all possible suspects.

  • Animals and other wildlife
  • Insects
  • Fire
  • Ice
  • Storms
  • Lightning strikes
  • Other equipment such as lawnmowers, edgers and pruning shears
  • Automobiles
  • Construction equipment
  • Herbicides containing glyphosate at sub-lethal levels

Avoiding tree wounds

In order to avoid tree wounds, you should make sure that your trees are healthy. While pruning can cause tree wounds to occur, removing broken or diseased limbs helps limit damage. Make sure to not top the tree or leave any cut stubs.

Use Integrated Pest Management to control pests, and water and fertilise your trees. Mulch the roots with.

FAQ about treating tree wounds

What can you use to seal a branch cut?

Some of these products are made from asphalt and petroleum. Alternative natural tree sealers include collagen and aloe.

How long will it take a wound to heal on a tree?

Healing can take anywhere between 15 to 20 years. Within the tree, the compartmentalization is quick and efficient. It could take up to three years.

Can you bandage a whole tree branch?

A cloth bandage may be used if you accidentally removed too much of the bark or branch, without removing them. Wrap the affected area with burlap or a breathable material. You can secure it with twine. This method only works if the bark of the trees is still wet.
